Why the town’s name is
pronounced “Buuuda”, not “Boooda”!
The Carrington Hotel was
built in 1882 at its present location on
North Main by L.D. and Sarah
Carrington. Apparently, Mrs. Carrington
insightfully arranged to have the
International and Great Northern
Railroad make stops at the hotel for
meals. The hotel soon became well known
because of the wonderful food cooked by
the widows (“viudas” in Spanish)) at the
hotel. Records exist that indicate that
the Carrington Hotel fed 1,000 people in
one day!
Because the “v” is not
pronounced in Spanish, people often said
they were going to go and see the
“budas” instead of “viudas”. This is
the most popular explanation for the
unusual pronunciation of Buuuda’s name!
